TRENDS

Dear friends and fellow car collectors,

As I am writing these lines, we are now 1 week past the Biggie! The Monterey/Pebble Beach Auctions Circus once again lived up to its reputation. The big auction houses have once again set records in sales and staggering 170 million dollars (rounded) changed hands over the weekend!

It seems to indicate that the collector car business is well to do and most obviously there is no shortage of wealthy collectors willing to spend big money to buy their choice of cars. See all results on our website under Market & Trends.

But is this a true market barometer overall? I would caution anyone to digest those results very carefully when applying to the real world. To me, auctions, Monterey/Pebble Beach in particular, create an almost unreal atmosphere. It is a wonderful happening with the most beautiful cars in the world and a pool of wealthy enthusiasts playing big. The auction companies do a masterful job marketing their inventory ahead of time and the offerings and the way it is stirred up most certainly demand respect. But results are sometimes driven by emotion and surroundings, the spur of the moment, rather than solid market research. If you’re after one of only 4 Ferraris left on the planet, yes, you have to cough up the money right there if you want it. That is legitimate.

But if you buy a car of larger production numbers- like most of them are, please execute caution. Don’t misunderstand me, I love the auctions and I like Ebay, too, but all of those results need to be taken into consideration as price point indicators only, they are not the complete market and should not be viewed as such.
